How to think about finishes, durability and maintenance without getting distracted by a showroom sample.

Match material to use

The most expensive finish is not automatically the most suitable. Floors in a busy entry, surfaces near water and exterior elements all face different wear. Evaluate each material in the context of its actual location.

Texture, slip resistance, repairability and ease of cleaning often matter more over several years than a single visual impression.

Look past the sample

A small sample cannot show how a finish will behave across a whole room or under different lighting. Ask to see a larger installed area where possible, and check transitions at corners, thresholds and junctions.

Good detailing also depends on the work behind the visible surface. Waterproofing, substrate preparation and installation quality deserve attention even when they do not appear in a brochure.

Keep a clear record

Request the latest written specification and note which items are fixed, optional or subject to equivalent substitution. Confirm warranty and maintenance information in the project documentation before committing.
